The Original Saltwater Sandals

Somewhat of a cult classic stateside, Saltwater Sandals have finally made their way to our fine shores - just in time for summer no less.

Originating in the 1940s from the leather shortages in the wake of the second World War, Saltwater Sandals were primarily made from the scrap leather left over from making men's dress shoes.

Today, each pair of sandals are made from special treated natural leathers and have become renowned for their interlinking strap design. We've just received a fresh batch in a variety of colours and they're literally walking out the door - ahem.

Check them out online here.

L'Espadrij Originale

Authentic and true - Espadrij l'Originale are giving the humble espadrille a new lease on life. Originating from the Pyrenees and popularised in the 1940s by screen luminaries such as Lauren Bacall and Grace Kelly, espadrilles became synonymous with pared-down seaside style.

Manufactured in a small French village using traditional techniques, each pair is constructed from high-quality canvas with a water resistant jute sole. We've just taken delivery of a range of styles for ladies and gents - check out the men's selection online here and the women's here.

'Important Information' Exhibition

IIE

Friday night saw the launch of Ross Paxman & Rohan Newman’s ’IMPORTANT INFORMATION’, a collection of giclee prints that explores the concept that useless or discarded objects and pixels can take on a new life when separated from their original physical or digital contexts.

Inspired by the torrents of waste generated by the world that lives online, this is the duo’s first show together, having taken a wayward step from the familiar territory of applied artwork and a litany of commercial clients the likes of James Blake, Lee Jeans, Miami Horror and many more.

It will be running until the 25th of November so make sure you pop in and checkout items of mundane utility transformed to impossible, illusory structures and also otherwise meaningless or absentminded products of the internet that have been recycled into pieces that are infused with a minimalist day-glo power.

Bill Cunningham New York Giveaway

‘We all get dressed for Bill,‛ says infamous Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The ‘Bill’ in question is 80-year-old The New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. For decades, this pedal-powered cultural anthropologist has been obsessively chronicling fashion trends and high society soirées for the Times Style section.

Documenting uptown fixtures, downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair.  In turn, Bill Cunningham New York is a delicate, funny and often poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace.

Bill Cunningham New York hits cinemas on the 3rd of November. Thanks to Madman Entertainment, we have 10 double passes up for grabs. To throw your hat in the ring, drop us an email with your name and address at media@somewherestore.com.

'Unstable Assemblages' by Abbra Kotlarczyk

True to its namesake, our latest exhibition Unstable Assemblages by Abbra Kotlarczyk is precisely that - a volatile collection of images and abstractions exploring the relationship between representation, interpretation and wonder.

Drawing from an immense archive of personal photographs, digital imagery and magazine clippings, the artist has created a series of works that occupy a space between imagination and reality. Using a variety of mixed media, Unstable Assemblages presents an unfamiliar and eerie world with clear ties to the spiritual, psychic and occult.

Unstable Assemblages will be showing at Somewhere Gallery from now until the 22nd of October.

Strummer SS11 'Halcyon Days'

When it comes to fashion, there's a fairly tenuous balance between 'inspired by' and 'knocked off'. Thankfully, local label Strummer tread safely on the side of the former with their bohemian 'inspired' SS11 collection Halcyon Days.

Designer Edwina Hagon leads the way forward with a range that manages to simultaneously capture the free-spirited ideal of the 70s  music scene and a sense of contemporary sophistication - without dipping too far into the all too common 'vintage' basket.

Strummer is a new addition to the Somedays stable this season, and a welcome addition it is.
