'Circles' by Lauren Greenhalgh

Somewhere Gallery is proud to present Circles, the debut solo exhibition from Lauren Greenhalgh.

The exhibition comprises a series of intimate watercolour portraits documenting the range of positive influences exchanged within social relationships. The unpredictable and luminous nature of the medium allows for a minimalistic and stylised expression of the individual and their place with the social circle.

Circles will be on display from April 23 to May 18.

Marcus James Carne

This week sees the opening of a spanking new exhibition in our gallery space from local artist Marcus James Carne - which also happens to be the title of the exhibition.

We had a little catch up with Marcus and here's what he had to say:

What is your new exhibition about?

My first solo exhibition is simply a collection of works produced over the summer in my studio, along with a few older peices, an exploration of media and techniques to try and develop something unique.

What inspired you to create these works?

I draw inspiration from anywhere at anytime, a lot comes from music, and just simply looking around. But more recently, creating conceptual work inspires me to produce more and more

What is your process when producing art and what materials have you used?

My process usually begins with a drawing and then i naturally move to printmaking, but occasionally working with mixed media, paint, and recently, stitching. I used to use recycled materials, envelopes, card and paper, which i used for collages however more recently i have been using alot of linen and timber.

Who are your favourite artists?

Always a hard question to answer, but some of my favourite artist are, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Raafat Ishak & Pablo Picasso.

The exhibition runs until April 20, so poke your head in for a look-see.

Who doesn't love a good-old, nail biting, edge of your seat type thriller?

Headhunters is exactly that type of film.  Based on the best-selling novel by Norwegian writer Jo Nesbo, this fast-paced flick centres around the charming villain Roger Brown, a man who seems to have it all: he is Norway's most successful headhunter, married to beautiful gallery owner Diana, owns a magnificent house – and is living larger than he should. The unscrupulous Brown leads a life of excess and financed by dangerous art thefts.

When he meets the Dutchman Clas Greve he sees the chance to become financially independent and starts planning his biggest hit ever. But he soon runs into trouble – and it’s not his financial problems that are threatening to bring him down.

Thanks to Rialto, we've got 10 double passes up for grabs to catch this exciting release. So if you're in Sydney or Melbourne, drop us a line at media@somedays.com.au and you'll be in it to win it - remember to include your postal address.

Anti Christ Mass by Sinuet

Somewhere Gallery is proud to present Anti Christ Mass, a new exhibition by Melbourne-based artist Sinuet.

In the words of the artist...

"The show is a reflection of religious art over the past centuries. Inspired by the dedication to paint a higher being, Anti Christ Mass is an agnostic perspective of holy images. This exhibition is not for or against religion, it is a fascination of faith which reflects the current trend of being an atheist to the fanatics of God."

Anti Christ Mass will run until the 23rd of March.

Cuba by Kristian Laemmle-Ruff

Our first exhibition for 2012 comes from Melbourne based photographer Kristian Laemmle-Ruff.

Cuba
is an intimate vision of a unique cultural and social landscape. Having been in a 1950s time warp, the communist island is now changing. Tensions between younger and older generations are growing as pressure from capitalism builds. The change has been slow but is now accelerating with the weakening US embargo.

“This shift is what drew me to Cuba", says Laemmle-Ruff. "I photographed to better understand. The camera dangled beside my waist as I hit the shutter. By shooting blindly I was able to remain relatively unobtrusive and gain a closer perspective of everyday life.”

Laemmle-Ruff’s reoccurring compositional imbalance serves as a way to disorientate viewers - alluding to Cuba's relationship with the outside world. Analogous to Leon Levinstein's fragmented New York photographs, Cuba presents a collection of vignettes, photo by photo building a more complete mosaic.

These spontaneous and informal representations celebrate the Cuban way of life - documenting interactions and exchanges between its people. The vibrant streetscapes flourishing with commotion and life reveal a strong sense of identity and equality. Cuba's independence and its philosophy of revolution are now in the hands of a new generation.

Cuba will be on display in our gallery from January 30 - February 2012.

NN07 Now In Store

Our first new addition for the upcoming season comes in the form of NN.07 - the brainchild of Danish lads Ulrik Pedersen and Victor Lindh.

Terms like 'timeless' and 'understated' seem to be thrown about with reckless abandon when discussing the current crop of menswear coming out Europe at the moment. And, without resorting to such descriptives, NN.07 is exactly that.

We've just taken delivery of a tidy selection of shirting in a variety of checks, stripes and solids. Fit and finish is of paramount importance and the clear attention to detail is evident in the small touches.

Take a gander in store or online here.
